Is Your Battery Ready For another Cold Winter!

October 30, 2013

With winter fast approaching and predictions of another cold and miserable winter, is your battery ready for the challenge of winter starting. It is a proven fact in most cases, that your battery will lose 33 percent of its power when the temperature dips below freezing, and over 50 percent when it falls below zero.

Keep these facts in mind, you need a battery that will provide you with painless and peace of mind, no one needs to be stranded in no man's land. With colder temperatures, it will take up twice the amount of current need in favourable conditions.

Some Advice on how to Winterizing Your Battery:

-Get Professional opinion on the condition of your battery, the naked eye is not always able to look for for corrosion that is hidden under the metal between the connection and terminal.

-Never allow your battery to give in to old man winter, why you should always have your charging system tested at least every six months.

-Charge your battery so it can maintain a proper charging level, with a fully charged battery there is a good chance your battery will with stand the temperature to at least -40 Celsius.

-You should also check the battery posts, fasteners, making sure there is an above average connection, and secured properly to the battery.

Check List for Peace of Mind Weatherization:

Now is the time to fully check your vehicle to meet and exceed winter driving, now just only your battery. Some helpful tips on what you should check and replace if needed.

-Check and replace windshield wipers every 12 months.
-Check windshield fluid weekly or as need, use a 50/50 combination washer fluid and water.
-Check and make sure defroster and heater are working to there capabilities.
-Check all your bulbs, lights and are working properly.
-Check your tire pressure at least once a week, check inside the drivers door for proper PSI.
-Change you oil at every 5,000 km or 3,000 miles.
-Check your exhaust system for any leaks.
-You should also perform a flush on your cooling system and add new fluid at a 50/50 ratio.
-Check all your belts, clamps and hoses.

You should also invest in an emergency kit, so in case you do break down you have the necessary items to get you back on the road. Such as a battery booster pack, cell phone, blankets, flash-light and some high energy snack bars.

Fall Recommendation That Your Vehicle Requires

August 27, 2013

With summer coming to an end, means your vehicle will also need attention to keep it running effective for the new season. Keep your vehicle well maintained is not only wise but it will "Save" you not only a lot of money but grief.

Vehicles need to be fully inspected for all seasons, winter creates many headaches for drivers and having your vehicle inspected is the first step you should have performed before winter arrivals.

One of the very first items that should come to your mind, is winter tires, having your existing tires inspected or researching a set of new tires is an important factor that many wait until the last minute. Keep in mind just because your tires have a lot of thread left and they look good, winters life expectations is approximately 4 years. What happens is the compound that make up the tires dry up and making your tires unsafe for any type of driving.

Some of the recommendations we recommend that you should always do for  any season is the following items that l will list for your peace of mind driving.

Inspection of Tires, should always be performed at least once a week, for proper tire pressure, as winter approach tires will loose more air during the winter then any other month. Make sure you have no visible cracks on your tires either on the side wall or in between the threads. This is what could happen if you fail to do the above.

Your Cooling System, will also need a lot of attention, makes sure your antifreeze is performing at it's best level, investing on tester is also a wise idea, they cost like around $5, a good investment. Make sure the mix is correct 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze and the level is full.

Replace Wipers, summer wipers do not work as well as proper wipers in the winter, so you should at least check them or have them replaces with a wiper manufactured for winter or just a set of new wipers. Make sure your wiper sprayer is working properly and your wind shield fluid tank is full.

Clean Your Battery Terminals, inspection of your battery terminals will keep the flow of the required electricity to operating your vehicle at its peak performance. Clean the sulphur that builds around the terminals with a wire brush. Always lubricate your battery terminals with any petroleum products, this will help provide the build up on your battery terminals.

Inspect Your Spark Plugs,   properly gapped spark plug will not only improve your gas mileage, but it will allow your vehicle to perform at its peak performance.

Have Your Brakes Inspected, should be done every three or four months depending on how much city driving you do. Keeping your brakes inspected for wear and tear is a very safety related item of your regular maintenance check list. Most shop will inspect your brakes when you have an oil change.  Your front

Front End of your vehicle, inspecting all the moving and none moving components, such your ball joints, idler arms, pitman arms, shocks, wheel bearings and have your vehicle aligned at least once a year. This will add life to your tires and saving you a lot of money in the long haul.

Oil Changes and rotating your Tires. You should have your oil changed regardless of which comes first the 3 months or 5,000 km is what we recommend to protect the life of your engine. Keep in mind that the oil in your vehicle is like the blood in our bodies.

The importance of having your wheels re-torqued, keeping you safely on the road

August 22, 2013

One of the most forgotten processes done by most auto repair shops and dealership is reminding the customer to come back to have their wheels re-torqued.

Re-torquing your wheels is a safety feature that has to be performed within 50 - 75 Km after you had your tires switched over. When ever you switch from summer tires to winter tires or visa a versa. This process has to be done with any cost to you as a customer.

Patterns to follow when torquing your wheels

It is not really that difficult to torque wheel fasteners properly, but it's not difficult to foul up the job either. The guidelines are very important to follow, each vehicle has a vehicle manufacturer torque specifications following those instructions to the letter. this information is normally found in the owners manual.

Your shop should always also inspect the threads and mating surface to ensure that everything will fit clean and snug. One major trouble spot can occur if wheel fasteners are not OE. Make sure when your remounting a tire/wheel assembly the wheel fastener is absolutely compatible to the type of seat it will be torqued.

torque wrench

If you ever feel a vibration in your vehicle. This is often followed by premature tire wear and brake pedal pulsation. In many cases the number one cause of brake pedal pulsation is uneven wheel fastener torque. Just a small difference of 20 percent between any two wheel fasteners is too much.

The rule you should you always be aware of, any time a wheel is removed, it should be re-torqued. So you should drive the vehicle for 50 -75 km and then return to that dealer and have that wheel or wheels re-torqued. before leaving the automotive shop, ask when you should bring the vehicle back to be re-torque.

this is the last thing you need to happen

"You can increase the life of your tires, following these steps"

June 19, 2013

Major tire manufacturer Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., if you take the correct steps and proper care of your vehicle tires you can expect tread life to increase to as much as 50 percent at no extra cost. Not only will it increase your fuel economy and add thousands of additional miles to tread life by just keeping them with the proper PSI, just takes a few minutes each week. Always check inside your drivers door for the proper PSI recommended for your vehicle, not the one you see on the actual tire.

You will found this label inside the drivers door
Buy your self a good tire gauge and check the tire pressure once a week, it only takes a few minutes, overinflated tires are just as danger as under inflated tires.

You may have not filled the tires properly, tires also lose air naturally through a process called permeation and changes in the outside temperature. Tires can lose on an average one or two pounds of air in cool weather and even more during the warmer weather.

Never rely on your local gas station pump for an accurate reading on your PSI, why it advisable for you to invest give or take $10 - $15 dollars on decent tire gauge.

Proper Tire Gauge
As a rule to also implement into your maintenance schedule, is rotate your tires with every second oil change, this provides the tires with a balance for wear and tear with all four tires. Have your front end inspected by a licensed mechanic, for any loose parts, like tie rod ends, pitman arms, lower and upper ball joints and wheel bearings. With any of the work above, follow it up with a front wheel alignment.

With proper care you should expect to get anywhere from 96,000 km to  approximately 120,000 km from a set of tires before your wear bars show through. What are wear bars? They are built-in indicators appear as strips that run across the tread pattern when it has worn down to 1/16th of an inch (1/4 inch for snow tires) indicating that tire life has met it's life expectation.

Driving on tires that have exposed wear bars is not only unsafe but illegal. You will need to replace the tires as soon as possible. Here is an illustration of what a wear indicator looks like and how to read it properly.

The wear indicators are circled in red

Summer Recommendation for keeping your vehicle running efficient

June 6, 2013

Perhaps we should not be in a panic to get our vehicle ready for summer driving. With the way the weather has been who knows what our next season will be. Sooner or later mother nature will provide us with some warmer and perhaps hot weather.

Some of the key areas you will need to focus on with your vehicle are listed below to ensure you that you have your vehicle running at it's peak performance.

Check or replace your tires.
If you have two sets of tires, one for winter driving and the other for summer driving you should have had them installed already by your local garage. They should be properly balanced, correct (PSI) and do not forget to go back and have them re-check for tightness after you had them mounted. this should be don within 30 - 50 kms of driving as a safety precautionary.

Lube Oil and change all your filters
Changing your oil should be done every 5,000 kms or 3,000 miles regardless of what your manufacturer say's it is the blood line and will add additional life to your investment. Air Filter, fuel filter should all be changed and one other filter not many think of is the cabin air filter. A cabin air filter is a mechanism that keeps air inside the passenger compartment of your vehicle from becoming stale and unhealthy. Many consumers are not even aware their vehicle has a cabin air filter. Normally found inside the dash or else where where it is not easily seen. More Information on this subject

Coolant and Air Conditioning System
rust and sediment will accumulate over a period of time in the cooling system. When your flushing your radiator according to the guide lines provided to you in your owners manual will keep your vehicle cooling system clean and operating properly. More Information on this subject.

Your Air Conditioning system should be fully inspected. Coolant is subject to rapid break down because it functions in a hot and hostile environment. When the coolant's rust inhibitors get depleted, the confined cooling passages in the engine and radiator are vulnerable to corrosion. This should be down at a proper garage that has expertise in this field.

Have all Your Belts and Hoses Inspected
Your belts and hoses are basically the blood line to keeping your engine operating at its peak performance. When a hose or a belt fails, it can or will cause an engine to overheat, loss of power steering and loss of the electrical charging system.  Read more Information on this subject

The Last Tip we all know but forget at times.
Never leave a pet in a hot vehicle, the temperature can reach unbearable conditions and may cause instant death.

Book your vehicle to have all the summer maintenance that it requires, we save you a great deal of time, frustration and most of all avoid costly future repairs that could have been easily avoided.

Why You Need snow Tires during winter

February 13, 2013

Understanding how winter tires out perform all season tires you will have to understand what is underneath all that snow and how the pavement changes drastically during the cold months of winter. It becomes a very irregular landscape with sharp points, deep valleys and when your car rolls along these two different surface rubber and the road meet, they must interface for a good grip.

Snow tires with its rubber compounds are a softer rubber that allows the tire to have more flexibility and flexible enough to wiggle and fit into the microscopic grooves in the pavement. This allows the winter tires to perform and achieve the  maximum contact and use all of its surface to push off as it moves forward. The winter tire much more flexible, if it was not, it would never be able  to get into the grooves in the pavement.

Winter tires will last a good 4 years, possibly 5 years, just because you have great looking thread on your tires will not mean that the tires will perform to what they originally where forecast to do.  The reason is the compound find in the rubber over time will get hard, making the tire unsafe for winter driving and more then likely hydro plane in wet, slushy and snowy conditions, the tire will no longer have the flexibility it once had.

It is important that you have your tires checked each winter before having them installed, taking it to an authorize tire dealer is the best choice they understand how winter tires perform and what to look for in tires that may not meet the future winter conditions of the up coming year. A rule of thumb is they should last a good 4 to 5 years before they become unreliable and unsafe for winter driving.

Once a week is a good habit to check all of your tires PSI making sure that they have the correct tire pressure on each wheel. when the temperature drops, your tires will lose some air making them unbalance with the specification of the manufactures specs. Always take the PSI from inside the drivers door, you will see a yellow stick with tire pressure and other information, never use what a tire says as the PSI.

If you follow the simple steps of checking your tire PSI once a week during winter, as your doing that look at the tire for any visible unbalanced ware and tear on your tires indicating that you may need a front wheel alignment or something is not functioning correctly. You can purchase a good tire pressure monitor for less then $10.00 a very wise investment.

Checking the tire pressure
weekly is a good habit to have

There is an old saying in the tire world the cheapest snow tires will out perform the most expensive all season tires during the winter months.
