The purpose of a Timing Belt and Water pump

November 28, 2012

The timing belt which is also known as a timing chain, plays a vital role in the function and operation of your vehicle, also needs to be maintain to the specification of your manufactures specs. The function of the timing belt it turns the engine's camshaft at a speed set by the crankshaft. This allows the crankshaft to operate the camshaft in opening and closing within specific timing with the pistons, which pushes your engine to work properly and efficient.

The timing belt does exactly what it is named after to keep the engine "in time." if for some reason the belt has slipped or it is not properly aligned, the engine will not perform to it's capabilities and may cause your engine to break down. When you have your timing belt replaced you should always have your water pump replaced at the same time as they go hand in hand.

This is a very expensive process having a timing belt and water pump replaced, for the simple reason it is very tight inside the engine compartment. The vast major of the cost factor is due to the labour of getting at the timing belt and water pump, since there is not much room, several parts must be taking off in order for you to actually get to these parts of your engine. This is a job that is not highly recommended for an average garage to perform on your vehicle.

Configuration of Timing Belt and Water Pump
Timing Belt and Water Pump
how it performance
As you can see it makes sense to replace the water pump when ever your are replacing the timing belt as they go hand in hand with the over all performance of your vehicle's engine. Servicing your timing belt is a very costly process but presents an opportunity to extend the life of your vehicle by as much as up too 10 years. Since the timing belt runs on the water pump pulley in most late model vehicles, so it is just a matter of a few bolts to be removed in order to replace your water pump. Since the water pump seals can fail due to extra belt tension and general deterioration caused by age. Replacing your water pump will prevent an unforeseen disaster that could become very costly.

Idling your vehicle affects the environment and your wallet. Here are a few facts you should know

November 21, 2012

Cold Starts vs Idling

You may believe that you're doing the best for your vehicle by allowing it to warm up in the cold weather with a few minutes of idling. In fact, more than just the engine needs to be "warm up" in the cold weather with a few minutes of idling. In fact, more than just the engine needs to be warmed up and this can only happen if the vehicle is moving. For an average vehicle, it takes about five kilo-meters of driving to warm up the engine as wee as the wheel bearings, steering, suspension, transmission and tires.

Shutting the engine down

One of the false arguments made to justify idling is that it cost money to shut the engine, That is a complete misnomer  ten seconds of idling consumes the same amount of fuel as starting the engine after shutting it down. As for wear and tear factor on the battery and starter, it adds up to about $10 per year, compared to saving an average of 66-litres of gasoline a year by simply reducing idle time from 5 minutes to 30 seconds.

Idling and engine wear

Prolonged idling is also one of the worst things the owner can do to an engine. Aside from being a complete waste of fuel (you are travelling zero kilometres for the fuel consumed), excessive idling can contaminate the engine oil, which will lead to premature and very costly, engine wear down the road.

Keep the tank topped-up

The practice of idling with a low level not only stirs any dirt in the tank, but it also promotes the build-up of condensation in the tank, especially in colder temperatures. Keeping the tank topped up minimizes both risks. With 20% more cleaning agents than before. Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasoline's protect intake valves and fuel injectors from performance-robbing gunk while you drive.

Why "RJ's" charges by the hour not by the Book!

November 9, 2012

Something that is over looked by many customer, for the simple reason they have
not really understood how the hours where calculated on specific work done to their vehicles. Most shops use a fix rate for each specific job that is worked on. Let's take this example into consideration a "Front Brake Job" including replacing  "Front Rotors" and "Ceramic Pads," calls for 2 hours, most good techs will do this in hour or less. But the customers will be charged for 2 hours not the one hour it took the tech to perform this work.

This is called a flat rate system that most repair shops use in order to accumulate additional hours towards their pay checks and repair shop, it is a win, win situation for the repair shop and the tech. Here at RJ Pick Up Service we charge by the hour if took us 3 real hours and the book calls for 4.5 hours you will only get charged the 3 hours. This is what we call a share win, we both benefit from this process, your happy and we have your business for future service.

This system has been in place since day one here at RJ Pick Up Service! Well most shops are empty we have had a steady flow of work and on some cases had to turn work away or re book for another time and day. So next time you get any work done on your vehicle you should ask this question is your shop on a flat rate or hourly rate. When you compare quotes, you will see a drastic difference in pricing from hourly rate to a flat rate quote.

Our main focus here is too educate our customer through articles we write about on how to maintain your vehicle and keep your vehicle running to it's peak performance. By sharing this type of information we all benefit; we do work that is only needed to be done, and keeps our shop busy, all that really matters. Thanks to our loyal customers and look forward to our future customers.

This is the time to do it, let us look and evaluate the condition of your winter tires, keep in mind winter tires last 3 to 4 years depending on the brand you own. The compound used in winter tires become harder each year making your tires not as safe as they should be, Most people think, well my tires look like they have a lot of tread left, but that is a misconception of what the expected life of a winter or any tire for that matter.

We are now Booking all our appointments for re and re tires on rims or off rims. When you do get your tires remounted, make sure that you have a follow up to have your tires re torqued, this is very important and should be part of your package. Re torquing means that your wheel bolts have a possibility of becoming loose and should be re torque, takes just a few minutes, we provide all our customers with a reminder that they should have this no charge item looked after. Safety is everything!

What to ask before getting your next oil change

September 24, 2012

Oil changes are probably the most common automotive services - performed so frequently that consumers may often pass up the opportunity to get more for their service dollar.

With auto-makers trying to gain increased efficiency, the "ordinary" oil change is become more comprehensive. Not only are companies recommending synthetic oil, but many auto -makers are developing their own oil specifications.

"The best way for consumers to ensure that they're getting optimal protection and using a product that meets factory specs is to ask a few questions to their service provider," says Jay Buckley, an ASE-certified master mechanic and technical training manager at Fram Group.

Doing your homework by reading the owner's manual is always a plus, he notes, but simply knowing what to ask will go a long way. Here are Buckley's recommendations:

Ask what is included in the service.
Many dealers and service stations bundle several different inspections in with the oil change. It's a great time for a mechanic to inspect brakes, hoses and under-car components to help stop a small problem from becoming a big and expensive one. In most cases, these additional inspections are a bargain.

Ask if the right specification of motor oil is being used.
Oil-change facilities like to use "bulk oil," which as the name implies, is a single viscosity grade and specification of oil bought in bulk from a supplier.  It will often suffice for many motor vehicles, but certainly not all. If your car or SUV requires a specialized formula of motor oil, such as a high-efficiency 0W-20 synthetic, or a manufacturer's specification, such as GM dexos, this "standard" oil may cause problems and potential invalidate the new-car warranty.

Ask if a premium oil filter will be installed.
Often overlooked during an oil change is the quality of the oil filter. A premium filter, such as Fram UltraTM, can trap more damaging dirt from circulating through your engine. In standardized tests, this filter had double the dirt-holding capacity of the leading economy filter brands average. the ability to trap and hold harmful particles for as much as 24,000 km or 14,400 miles becomes much more important as auto-makers extend service intervals, often to just once a year.

How your mechanic handles these questions can help you determine if "YOU" trust his or her work. Not only that, but you'll become an informed consumer, more knowledgeable about protecting your automotive investment.

New Adjustments to Environment Handling Charges

September 19, 2012

We want to share and explain the new increase that will take effect on October 1, 2012 with the Environmental Handling Charges (EHC's). These adjustments reflect changes to the method for determining amounts payable each quarter by Petro-Canada and other 'Stewards" of Containers and Antifreeze, to Stewardship Ontario ("SO") under provincial legislation. SO manages the provinces Municipal Hazardous or special Waste (MHSW") program, which promotes the environmentally-responsible management of designated waste materials, including used Containers and Antifreeze.

Due to recent changes to provincial legislation, the amounts payable by Stewards in connection with certain designated materials, including Containers and Antifreeze, are no longer calculated on a fixed fee per unit basis. Instead, Stewards now pay their proportion share of SO's actual costs to manage a particular category of used material.

Effective October 1, 2012 these changes will be in effect:

-Applicable containers of lubricating, and other oils with a capacity of 30 litres or less (Containers)
EHC increase from $0.09 to $0.14 per litre of capacity

-Radiator antifreeze in containers with a capacity of 30 litres or less ("Antifreeze")
EHC increase from $0.09 to $0.24 per litre of capacity.

As a small business owner we are now forced to pass this hidden taxes to our customers, not exactly what we had in mind to create new business, a price increase due to another Ontario hidden tax. All we can do is educate our customer, so they can understand that this is not a price increase from us, but a tax increase due to the cost of whatever. Just with all that is going on, with gas prices, slow economy exactly what Ontario needed to stimulate the economy. The Ontario government at work for all us Ontarians.
