What are some good work practices to follow?

March 7, 2012

Before you attempt to work on your vehicle, here is a list of recommendation for you to follow for your own health and safety. When you follow theses recommendation you are taking the necessary precautions for your safety.

-Read, understand, and follow the instructions and recommendations described in the operating and maintenance manuals for tools and equipment you use.

-Stop the engine and disengage power before servicing.

-Work as a team. Do not start an engine, engage power, raise, or lower an implement or hoist without warning other people in the area.

-Lock out equipment by removing the ignition key and by disconnecting the battery cables.

-Always disable the electrical system by disconnecting a battery cable or removing fuses for a circuit when working on the electrical system (e.g., starter motor, radio, wiring, ignition, etc.)

-It is good practice to disable the electrical system when working on or near the safety air bags.

-Know how to work safely with all tools and equipment.

-Attach a "Do Not Operate" tag to the vehicle's control panel with the reason stated (such as 'no brakes').

-Use jacks and hoists to move and handle heavy components.

-Use solvents with a flashpoint above 60°C where possible to reduce the risk of fire.

-Clean up spilled oil, grease, fuel and other slipping and fire hazards immediately.

-Inspect compressed air hoses regularly, and immediately replace any which are cracked, worn or frayed.

-Ensure that air pressure reducers, gauges and moisture/dirt traps are cleaned and functioning.

-Dispose or recycle waste materials in accordance to government regulations.

-Above and underground tanks, pump pits, and similar areas are considered confined spaces and can be dangerous. Only specifically trained individuals are allowed entry. Contact your local jurisdiction for more information.

-Do not use gasoline for cleaning. Use cleaning solvents in approved containers.

-Do not wear rings, watches, ties, jewelry, or torn or loose clothing. Button up shirt front and sleeves. Tie back long hair.

-Do not run engines inside unless ventilation systems are attached, and the exhaust is vented outside.

-Change oily clothing and launder regularly to prevent skin irritation and dermatitis.

-Use safe lifting techniques when moving heavy parts.

-Do not allow customers, family or untrained people in the work area.

Tips on how to avoid having your car stolen!

March 5, 2012

Tips on how to avoid having your car stolen!

Car thefts seem to occur with greater frequency where large groups of cars are parked for extended periods of time in places such as shopping centers, colleges, sporting events, movie complexes, and large apartment complexes and airport parking lots, especially park and fly where your vehicle is unattended for a long period of time.

Here are some tips You can avoid being a victim of a car thief.

-Never leave your vehicle unattended, well it is running, we all have done this.

-Avoid leaving any keys in your car ignition, inside a garage, or in hide-a-key boxes.

-Always roll up your windows to the top and lock your car even if it's in front of your house.

-Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked, lock them in the truck.

-Always park your vehicle in high-traffic and well lighted areas, if possible.

-Use a mechanical device that locks the steering wheel, column, or brakes.

-Avoid leaving personal identification documents, ownership/title, credit cards in your vehicle.

-Make sure you have all the information about your vehicle, plate number, (VIN) number on a card in your wallet if your vehicle is stolen. This will help the police with their investigation

-Some vehicles come with some sort of security from the factory, Sometimes you may need to upgrade the system to fit your needs and environment. The best systems are the ones that shut the fuel supply so that the care will not be able to start.

-If your vehicle is stolen, report it to the police immediately.

Hope you found these tips to be useful and helpful in avoiding your vehicle from being stolen, when you could of prevented it. If you have enjoyed this article please share and leave a comment if you have ever had your vehicle stolen.

Here is Eleven Tips for YOU to Keep Your Vehicle Running Smooth!

February 23, 2012

Follow these steps and you will not only have a very efficient running vehicle it will save you a lot of unnecessary money on future maintenance that can be avoid by following these steps.

1. It is ideal for auto-mobile owners to refer to the user manual for fixing certain minor problems within the engine. As a thumb rule, change the oil filter on a regular basis, each 5,000 - 6,000 Klms. With every second oil change you should have your tires rotated.

2. Checking the tire inflation is very important. Tires, which are under-inflated, result in loss of fuel efficiency. This is one cheap form of safety and preventive maintenance. Check the tires every month. Especially during the winter months, with the drop of temperature, will effect your PSI in your tires.

3. Check all the fluids that include power steering, brake, antifreeze and wind shield washer solvent and trans-axle/transmission, since these fluids ensure safety and good performance of a vehicle and are an important measure of taking care of your vehicle.

4. Since a restricted fuel injector/polluted spark plug reduces the efficiency of fuel by 30%, an auto mobile owner has to be cautious while tuning up the engine.

5. Clean the battery posts and cables when needed and check the same for corrosion. Besides, check battery fluids and fill them if low except for batteries that are maintenance-free.

6. Inspect engine belts always since worn belts are likely to affect performance of the engine. See if these belts have developed any cracks and try fixing the problem.

7. Lubricate the chassis often, since it extends life of engine components.

8. Check the lighting system including turn signals, tail-lights, brake and headlights.

9. Auto mobile owners need to check washer blades of the wind shield for tears and cracks and replace them once a year.

10. Always check for air filtration system in the engine. Owners need to do this at every oil change for confirming if there is any damage or clogging. It ensures better functioning of the vehicle.

11. Always keep the user manual handy. No matter whether the engine is minor or major, the moment it gives any problem, owners may refer the same for fixing temporary problems before taking the vehicle to a qualified technician.
