Three types of vehicles that use this type of energy

April 14, 2012
Electric vehicles (EVs) are propelled by an electric motor (or motors) powered by rechargeable battery packs. Electric motors have several advantages over internal combustion engines (ICEs). We discuss the three types that have this ability.
Battery-electric
Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are powered by electric motors that draw from on-board rechargeable storage batteries. When the batteries run low, they must be plugged into the power grid to recharge. Electric vehicles produce no tailpipe emissions.
Hybrid-electric
Hybrid-electric (HEVs) combine a battery-powered electric motor with a conventional internal combustion engine. Thus they offer the driving range and rapid refueling of conventional vehicles, together with features of electric vehicles. Hybrids cannot be recharged using external electricity – they use the gasoline engines, regenerative braking, and the energy produced from coasting to recharge their batteries. Through increased fuel efficiency and reduced fuel use, hybrids can reduce GHG emissions.
Plug-in hybrid electric
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are hybrids with high-capacity batteries that can be charged by plugging into the power grid. They can run in electric-only mode until the battery charge is depleted. Although PHEVs don’t have to be plugged in to be driven, they will not achieve maximum driving range or optimal fuel consumption without charging. When operating electric mode, plug-in hybrids produce no tailpipe emissions.
We all know there are many advantages of owning and operating these types of vehicles with this type of technology, but there also has to be several disadvantages. We will review all the advantage and disadvantage with these types’ electric operated vehicles on next topic.

Alternative fuels and technologies:

April 13, 2012
Ethanol
Ethanol is a renewable fuel made from plant materials that absorb C02 while growing. Because of this, using ethanol in place of non-renewable fossil fuels, such as gasoline, reduces GHG emissions. The level of GHG emissions reduction depends on a number of factors, including the percentage of ethanol in the fuel blend.
All major vehicle manufacturers design their vehicles to run year-round on gasoline containing an ethanol blend of up to 10 percent (E10), without modification. E10 is available at many service stations across Canada.
Several vehicle manufacturers offer flexible-fuel vehicles (EFVs) that can run on ethanol blends of up to 85 percent ethanol (E85) and 15 percent gasoline. Ethanol contains less energy than gasoline, so in higher-level blends such as E85, more fuel is needed to travel the same distance.
Biodiesel
Biodiesel is another fuel made from renewable resources (plant or animal materials). Using blends of diesel fuel with biodiesel can reduce GHG emissions compared with using unblended diesel. The level of GHG emissions reduction depends on a number of factors including the percentage of biodiesel in fuel blend. New diesel-powered vehicles are designed to operate on diesel fuel containing up to 5 percent biodiesel (B5) year-round, without modification.
Electricity
Electricity is a readily available energy source that is used as a fuel in three types of vehicles: battery-electric, hybrid-electric and plug-in hybrid electric.  We will share these three types, of vehicles tomorrow. Saving fuel; Tips on driving and maintenance

April 10, 2012

The most important thing one can do is chose the most fuel-efficient vehicle for your everyday needs, you can achieve additional savings and reduce your vehicle’s impact on the environment by following these tips created by.

The Natural Resources Canada

Driving Tips:

-Accelerate gently: The harder you accelerate the more fuel you will use. In the city, where about half of the fuel you consume is used to accelerate your vehicle, you can save as much as 15 percent by pressing the pedal gently. Imagine an open cup of coffee on your dashboard – don’t spill it!!

-Maintain a steady speed: you will not only consume less fuel but also help enhance traffic flow, minimize emissions and enjoy safer driving conditions. Use cruise control for highway driving, where conditions permit, to maintain a steady speed and optimize your fuel savings.

-Anticipate traffic: Hard braking and rapid acceleration burns more fuel and are unsafe. Drive defensively and watch ahead for changes in traffic flow. When possible, leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you.

-Coast to decelerate: By anticipating slowdowns and removing your foot from the accelerator as early as possible, you can decrease your speed and conserve fuel. Most vehicles today have fuel-injection systems that automatically shut off the flow of fuel to the engine when you accelerator is released, so take advantage by coasting.

-Avoid high speeds: The faster a vehicle travels above 80 km/h the more fuel it consumes. For example, vehicle needs 20 percent more fuel to go 120 km/h than to go 80 km/h. slow down for safer and more fuel –efficient driving.

-Don’t idle unnecessarily: If you’re going to be stopped for more than 60 seconds – when parked –turn the engine off.

-Use air conditioning sparingly: Due to the extra load on the engine, air conditioning can increase your vehicle’s fuel consumption by 20 percent. Roll down your windows when city driving, or use the vehicle’s flow-through ventilation on the highway.

-Lighten your load: Roof and bicycle racks decrease your vehicle’s aerodynamics and heavy items in your trunk add weight, causing your vehicle to burn more fuel. Take only what you need.

-Make one long trip instead of several short ones: Separate trips of less the 5 km do not allow a cold engine to reach its peak operating temperature, resulting in increased fuel consumption and emissions, Combine trips into one outing to save time, fuel and money.

-Leave your vehicle at home: Walk, bike, carpool or take public transit whenever possible.

Spring Maintenance Tips, at RJ Pick Ups Service!

March 27, 2012

This is an article l came across on researching the topic on “Spring Maintenance” on your vehicle. We at RJ Pick up Service; we understand what your car needs to run efficiently and up to its peak performance after a long and dreadful winter.

What our blog is focusing on,
is "Saving” you money when you could’ve had prevent it, with simple maintenance. That you did not expect, following our blog and our mission will save you time and grief. We educate our clients with knowledge on how to keep their repair bills down. Hope you have enjoyed and benefited from this article...

After battling months of snow and icy roads, your car is undoubtedly in desperate need of some serious tender-loving care. Follow this spring checklist to ensure that your car is tuned up and spring-ready.

Remove your winter tires / rotate all season radials

– If you have winter tires, it’s finally time to store them. If you don’t have winter tires, it’s equally important to have all season tires rotated. Driving in the winter weather can be hard on tires. Rotating tires regularly extends their life and will give you better braking and handling. This is especially important when you’re driving on wet roads that are typical during spring.
Wiper blades check

– Your wipers work hard all winter wiping away dirt and debris on your windshield. It is a good idea to replace them in the spring to be prepared for April showers.
Brake check – After the cold winter be sure to check your brakes. One of the warning signs is brake noise, including excessive grinding, squealing, screeching or chatter.

Clean the under body

– In addition to washing the exterior, be sure to spray the under body and underneath the rear and front bumpers to rinse away any salt build-up which can lead to erosion and rusting. Use a high-pressure sprayer or garden hose for best results.

Interior clean-up

– Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum! Be sure to throw away any unwanted garbage that has hibernated under your seats over the winter. And now is the time to store your winter car mats in the garage.
Apply a protectant

– Any vinyl surface including the dashboard, seats and the steering wheel are susceptible to cracking, sun damage and fading – be sure to apply a protectant at the beginning of the season and touch-up regularly.
Change oil

– If you’ve been using thinner oil for winter (i.e. 5W30) change back to 10W30 for warmer weather. But make sure you stick to the manufacturer’s recommended oil type for your car!

Check all fluids to make sure they’re topped up

– In the winter months, fluids are easily depleted as your engine works harder in the colder weather. Make sure to double-check all the car’s fluids regularly.
Wash your car

– Just like a good maintenance program prolongs the life and performance of your car, all vehicles regardless of the finish (clear coat, acrylic, enamel, etc.) require regular washing throughout the year. To preserve your car’s shine and protect the surface, wax your vehicle once it has dried completely.

What is important to know when removing wheels?

March 21, 2012

-Loosen wheel nuts before lifting vehicle off the ground.
-Raise vehicle only a few centimeters (one inch) from the floor when doing operations on a freewheel or frame-contact lift.
-Block a vehicle securely on a lift to prevent rolling.
-Remove or replace the wheel from a squatting position. Minimize back strain by not bending forward.
-Do not place hands or wrists under wheel well while vehicle is suspended.
-Do not service split rim-type tires unless specifically trained in their repair and hazards.

What are some tips for inspecting tires and rims?

Clean rims to ensure that all dirt and rust are removed from lock ring and gutter.
Check all parts. Discard any damaged, worn or corroded components after removal.

When using a tire-changing machine, what should I know?

Lock wheel hold-down device securely.
Remove valve core.
Keep hands clear of pinch-points.
Use the correct tools.
Use proper lubricant to seat tire.
Do not mount damaged tires or wheels.
