What to ask before getting your next oil change

September 24, 2012

Oil changes are probably the most common automotive services - performed so frequently that consumers may often pass up the opportunity to get more for their service dollar.

With auto-makers trying to gain increased efficiency, the "ordinary" oil change is become more comprehensive. Not only are companies recommending synthetic oil, but many auto -makers are developing their own oil specifications.

"The best way for consumers to ensure that they're getting optimal protection and using a product that meets factory specs is to ask a few questions to their service provider," says Jay Buckley, an ASE-certified master mechanic and technical training manager at Fram Group.

Doing your homework by reading the owner's manual is always a plus, he notes, but simply knowing what to ask will go a long way. Here are Buckley's recommendations:

Ask what is included in the service.
Many dealers and service stations bundle several different inspections in with the oil change. It's a great time for a mechanic to inspect brakes, hoses and under-car components to help stop a small problem from becoming a big and expensive one. In most cases, these additional inspections are a bargain.

Ask if the right specification of motor oil is being used.
Oil-change facilities like to use "bulk oil," which as the name implies, is a single viscosity grade and specification of oil bought in bulk from a supplier.  It will often suffice for many motor vehicles, but certainly not all. If your car or SUV requires a specialized formula of motor oil, such as a high-efficiency 0W-20 synthetic, or a manufacturer's specification, such as GM dexos, this "standard" oil may cause problems and potential invalidate the new-car warranty.

Ask if a premium oil filter will be installed.
Often overlooked during an oil change is the quality of the oil filter. A premium filter, such as Fram UltraTM, can trap more damaging dirt from circulating through your engine. In standardized tests, this filter had double the dirt-holding capacity of the leading economy filter brands average. the ability to trap and hold harmful particles for as much as 24,000 km or 14,400 miles becomes much more important as auto-makers extend service intervals, often to just once a year.

How your mechanic handles these questions can help you determine if "YOU" trust his or her work. Not only that, but you'll become an informed consumer, more knowledgeable about protecting your automotive investment.

New Adjustments to Environment Handling Charges

September 19, 2012

We want to share and explain the new increase that will take effect on October 1, 2012 with the Environmental Handling Charges (EHC's). These adjustments reflect changes to the method for determining amounts payable each quarter by Petro-Canada and other 'Stewards" of Containers and Antifreeze, to Stewardship Ontario ("SO") under provincial legislation. SO manages the provinces Municipal Hazardous or special Waste (MHSW") program, which promotes the environmentally-responsible management of designated waste materials, including used Containers and Antifreeze.

Due to recent changes to provincial legislation, the amounts payable by Stewards in connection with certain designated materials, including Containers and Antifreeze, are no longer calculated on a fixed fee per unit basis. Instead, Stewards now pay their proportion share of SO's actual costs to manage a particular category of used material.

Effective October 1, 2012 these changes will be in effect:

-Applicable containers of lubricating, and other oils with a capacity of 30 litres or less (Containers)
EHC increase from $0.09 to $0.14 per litre of capacity

-Radiator antifreeze in containers with a capacity of 30 litres or less ("Antifreeze")
EHC increase from $0.09 to $0.24 per litre of capacity.

As a small business owner we are now forced to pass this hidden taxes to our customers, not exactly what we had in mind to create new business, a price increase due to another Ontario hidden tax. All we can do is educate our customer, so they can understand that this is not a price increase from us, but a tax increase due to the cost of whatever. Just with all that is going on, with gas prices, slow economy exactly what Ontario needed to stimulate the economy. The Ontario government at work for all us Ontarians.

Changing your Air and Oil Filters the Importance!

September 6, 2012

Keeping your Air and Oil filters clean will drastically will provide you with a more efficient running vehicle, improves fuel consumption and prevents costly engine repairs to your vehicle. These items especially the Air Filter, gets over looked, as part of your regular maintenance program.

These items are the most inexpensive to be replace and are constantly over looked with regular maintenance programs, but have such an importance to keeping your vehicle running smooth and effectively for a long time. So how do these filter play such an important part with how your vehicle performance.

Air filters allow your engine to breath much more easily and performing at it's peak performance.  Next time you have driven on a long trip, check the front grill and licence plate. It will look pretty disgusting, with the splatter of bugs, sap, leaves and other grime items, which could also make it's way into the engine bay. If these items get pass the air intake and into the engine, it could cause abrasion or corrosion, exactly the two things you definitely do not need or want to happen.

Now with a clean Air Filter, chance are very good that these grime items will never make it pass the Air filter which is also protected in a plastic box, providing addition protection against the possibility of contaminants getting inside your engine intake. If you allow the Air Filter to become dirty and filled with all the above contaminants, then your Air filter will not do the job is is designed to do. Your vehicle will starve from a lack of air, which the combustion process needs to make power more efficiently. Causing your engine to work harder and increase in fuel consumption robbing you engine of power.

Think of it as your kidney cleaning your blood, a vehicles Oil filter keeps your engine oil clean of all impurities. Preventing many of the contaminants such as metal shavings, specks of dirty and other elements that some how get into your engine.

These contaminants will eventually lead to engine damage, providing low oil pressure and wearing down engine bearings.  this is why you should always have your Oil filter changed with every new oil change. With a clean Oil filter will provide a shield to your engine from harmful floating contaminants in the dirty oil.

Always have these items looked after and it will save you much unneeded grief and provide you with peace of mind from expensive engine repairs. Also the amount of money you will save just on your fuel consumptions, savings on one tank of gas will cover both items...
